PROJECT DESCRIPTION
OBLIGATED
Acrylic on Wood Panel, Video Projection*
27" x 40" looping video
Obligated is an animated painting where projection is created in tandem with a wall painting (acrylic).
The painting has areas designated for the projection and the projection is composited to interact with the still image of the painting.
In Obligated an image of a small child in a dragon costume reaches into a Jack-O-Lantern pumpkin for presumed to be a piece of candy. The Jack-O-Lantern is held by a very happy and loving grandmother, however the child has a look of disgust on her face. Projection infinitely fills the Jack-O-Lantern and the space surrounding the two figures with a flow of spice drop candies.
Conceptually, the piece is autobiographically sourced and discusses larger issues of how children are often taught to put elders before themselves as well as instantly grant them blind respect. Ultimately, the piece conveys the cyclical nature of adult modeling of non-consent, generational privilege and abuse of power and its negative impact on future generations.
*In its original form, live video of the spice drop candy was used. Currently this piece's projection was re-designed with CG animation.
